Abstract

1,145,268. Winding and reeling; curving. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 18 July, 1966 [27 July, 1965], No. 32137/65. Heading B3E. Strip handling apparatus comprises an uncoiler for rotatably supporting a strip to be uncoiled incident to processing thereof, drive means associated with the uncoiler for rotating a coil supported by the uncoiler to cause recoiling of a length of uncoiled strip, shear means spaced from said uncoiler and adapted to sever said length of uncoiled strip while a portion of the strip remains in coil form and supported by said uncoiler, and strip bending means arranged between said shear means and said uncoiler and adapted to induce a permanent set into at least a portion of said length of uncoiled strip in a manner that in recoiling, a substantially selfsustaining coil is formed. Strip is unwound from a coil A supported by driven cores and passes over a platen 25, adjustable by pistons and cylinders 26, 27, through pinch rolls 43, 44 to the rolls 11, 12 of a mill 10. When the trailing, scrap, end of the strip starts to unwind, the mill 10 is decelerated and the strip is cut by a shear 46. The mill 10 is then reversed or opened up, the pinch roll 43 raised and the strip extending back from the shear to the coil is rewound as the uncoiler is driven in reverse. Prior to this upper, driven, bending rolls 31, 32 on an arm 37 are lowered on to the strip and a lower roll 33, which may be driven or idle, on an arm 34 is raised to co-operate with the rolls 31, 32 to form a permanent set in the strip to aid recoiling. The rewound coil is removed by a jib crane (22), Fig. 2 (not shown).
