Abstract
1,143,103. Moulding building elements. K. KRUGER [trading as KERAPID-FERTIGUNG KRUGER & CO.]. 8 March, 1966 [9 March, 1965], No. 10134/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions B6 and E1] A method of laying a tiled surface comprises laying the tiles in rows within a frame, aligning the first row in one direction with a gauge 7, provided with stops 15 to determine the spacing of the tiles relative to each other in another direction at right angles to the one direction and moving the gauge progressively at predetermined intervals along the frame to determine the joint spacing of the rows and align the second and subsequent rows except the last row in the one direction and in the other direction at right angles to the one direction. The method is carried out by apparatus comprising the gauge 7 and the frame, the frame consisting of four parts 2, 3, 4, 5 the parts 2 and 3 forming the top and bottom of the frame and the parts 4 and 5 the sides of the frame. The parts 4 and 5 are provided with the abutments 6, 6<SP>1</SP> which determine the position of the gauge 7, the distance between the abutments being equal to the width of the gauge. The length of each abutment is equal to the width of one of the tiles plus the width of the desired joint. The gauge has handles 17 at its end portions and has shoulders 12, 13 near its ends which engage the inner faces of the frame parts 4 and 5 so that the longitudinal position of the gauge is determined by the shoulders. The stops 15 carried by the gauge are in the form of pins. In use, a sheet of gummed paper is spread on a table top underneath the frame and as the tiles are laid they are stuck to this sheet faced downwards and when they have all been positioned the frame is removed and a second frame is placed over them and filled with cement, the second frame having a height corresponding to the thickness of the desired concrete slab which is to be formed.- If it is desired to cover the other face of the concrete slab with tiles the frame consisting of the parts 2 to 5 is placed on top of the cement filled frame and a fresh layer of the tiles is laid as above straight on to the surface of the cement before it has set. The frame parts 2 to 5 can be detachably joined to each other but the size of the frame cannot be varied. In a modification the size of the frame can be varied by joining the parts 2 to 5 to each other by means of screw type clamps and in this construction the gauge is positioned with respect to the frame by means of pins enaging holes in members which are disposed outside the frame, this enabling the frame to also be used as shuttering for the cement since the cement can be smoothed without the stops interfering. The gauge consists of a flat bar to which separate portions are attached so that the position of the stops can be changed as desired.
