Soot removed from gases made by partial combustion of a carbon containing feed is taken up in an auxiliary hydrocarbon oil and mixed with the incoming feed stream, this mixed stream is then subjected to a separating process to yield at least one stream of lighter hydrocarbons and a stream of residual material, which is heavier than the auxiliary stream used for taking up the soot, and which is used for the partial combustion process. The separating process used may be flashing (as used in Fig. 1), deasphalting (Fig. 2, not shown) or thermal cracking followed by distillation (Fig. 3, not shown). Deasphalting using propane as solvent yields a stream of propane soluble light fraction and a residue which may comprise a soft bitumen, or even a powder of dry asphaltenes, together with the recycled soot. The thermal cracking may be carried out at 500-550‹ C. and followed by a flash distillation. As shown in Fig. 1, a stream 2 containing the recycled soot is combined with the hydrocarbon oil feed stream 1 and passed through a furnace 3 and into a flasher 4 to yield a lighter fraction 5 and a heavier bottoms fraction 6, containing the soot, which is passed to the gasification reactor 7 together with oxygen 8. The soot is removed from the product gas 10 by washing with water in unit 11 and the soot-containing water is passed to unit 15, e.g. an agglomeration apparatus, where it is contacted with the auxiliary hydrocarbon stream. The auxiliary hydrocarbon may be a partial stream 17 of the hydrocarbon feed 1, a partial stream 18 of the light fraction 5, or a mixture of these. The soot contained in the stream 16 may be in the form of a slurry or of soft or of even hard pellets. In unit 19 the stream 16, especially if it consists of pellets, is mixed with more of the auxiliary hydrocarbon stream to form the suspension 2 of carbon in oil.
