A machine for applying decalcomanias to a series of articles such as bottles (7), Figs. 3, 5, 6 (not shown), comprises a conveyer belt 2 which guides the articles through a spray device 12, 13 which applies adhesive prior to the articles, and through a heating device 23, before passing them to the transferring zone 31 between an application cylinder 8 and a pressure member 3. The decalcomanias are supplied to the cylinder 8 from containers 19, 20 and are heated in a device 16 before application to the articles. The pressure member 3 is adapted to oscillate into and out of operative engagement with successive articles, by means of a control cam (5), Fig. 6 (not shown), engaging a sliding roller (6). The heating device 23 incorporates rod-like heating elements (18), Fig. 3 (not shown), disposed parallel to the conveyer belt 2 and below a reflector (17) partially enclosing the articles (7), and the second heating device 16 includes a reflector disposed in an arc around a part of the periphery of the cylinder 8, and heating rods. The decalcomanias comprise a transparent foil carrying heat resistant printing in one or more colours, and attached to a backing sheet of paper with the interposition of protective layers. The decalcomanias are held on the cylinder 8 by suction through tubes (10), Fig. 7 (not shown), and the backing sheets are blown off after application of the decalcomanias into a discharge shaft 21. A pressure rolling device composed of rollers 28 driving a belt 29 which rolls the articles over a resilient surface 27 of sponge rubber presses down the decalcomanias after application. A worm 30 aids the feeding of the articles on the belt 2 to the zone 31.
