Abstract

A natural or synthetic rubber latex is treated to reduce its viscosity and/or to increase the size of the dispersed polymer particles by flowing the latex through a constriction at a pressure not less than 250 p.s.i.g. and not greater than 1000 p.s.i.g., the latex having a concentration of dispersed polymer particles of not less than 30% by weight and a pH in the range of 7 to 9. The constriction may be in the form of an orifice of a homogenizing valve, while the polymer particles may have an initial average size greater than, or less than respectively, 1000 Angstrom units. Specified synthetic rubbers are copolymers of conjugated diolefins with an aryl olefin or acrylonitrile, homopolymers of a conjugated diolefin, or polychloroprene-butadiene-styrene copolymers containing at least 20-30% bound styrene are preferred.
