Abstract

1,039,103. Refrigerators; defrosting. DUAL JET REFRIGERATION CO. March 15, 1963 [April 9, 1962], No. 10391/63. Heading F4H. In an open-fronted refrigerator in which air is circulated in inner and outer channels in the walls of the cabinet and is projected as separate panels across the front opening, the inner channel contains an evaporator which is defrosted for short periods of time at short time intervals and for long periods of time at long time intervals. As shown, three channels are provided, the inner channel containing an evaporator 50 and the intermediate channel an evaporator 53. The evaporators form part of the refrigeration system of Fig. 3 (not shown) in which evaporator 50 is arranged to be defrosted by hot gas supplied through a line 132 having a heater 134 and valves 122 and 122a are provided for cutting off liquid refrigerant flow to evaporators 50 and 53 respectively. The heater 134 is located immediately upstream of the outlet of the inner air panel and the inner and intermediate channels have dampers 202, 201 and 203, 204 upstream and downstream of their respective evaporators. At three hourly intervals valve 122 is closed, heater 134 is energized, dampers 201-204 are closed and hot gas is supplied to evaporator 50 for about three minutes. Upon termination of hot gas flow, dampers 201-204 and valve 122 are sequentially opened and heater 134 is turned off so that normal operation is resumed. Before the next defrost cycle valve 122a is opened to supply refrigerant to evaporator 53 to cool the intermediate air panel, the valve being closed before the defrost cycle is initiated. At about twenty-four hourly intervals the above cycle is repeated except that hot gas is supplied to evaporator 50 for about seventeen minutes. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown), the dampers 76, 78 and 86, 88 upstream and downstream of the evaporators are so associated with cross-over channels that, between hot-gas defrosts, relatively warm air from the intermediate air panel may be circulated over evaporator 50 while air from the inner panel circulates over evaporator 53.
