Abstract
1,032,852. Batteries. ELECTRIC STORAGE BATTERY CO. Jan. 14, 1963 [Jan. 29, 1962], No. 1543/63. Heading H1B. A sealed lead acid cell comprises in the charged state a positive electrode having at least 51% of the active paste in the form of alpha-lead peroxide with the balance in the form of beta-lead peroxide and a negative electrode having an active paste of sponge lead. The electrodes are separated by a compressed microporous separator and the cell is characterized by the absence of metallic ions having an overvoltage less than lead. The capacity of the negative electrode is at least equal to that of the negative electrode. The cell may contain no free electrolyte. The active paste for the positive electrode is made by the process disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 2,727,081. The separator may be made of polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinyl alcohol and the positive grid of pure lead or a lead calcium alloy. Pressure rise is prevented by the recombination of nascent hydrogen and oxygen at the negative electrode and by the reaction of oxygen with the sponge lead. Overcharging of the cell must be avoided.
