Abstract

1,029,894. Controlling gas burners. TESPA A.G. April 15, 1964, No. 15505/64. Heading F4T. [Also in Division F2] A safety device for preventing explosions in the gas pipes of burners comprises a flame trap 33 made of sintered metal or glass or glass fibre or synthetic plastic, a pressure relief valve 34 and a back pressure check valve 30 which is arranged to close in both directions of gas flow. The check valve 30 comprises a rubber disc urged by a spring 32 to seat on an upper seat 29 and urged by the gas flow to seat on a lower seat 31. The gas enters the device through an inlet 21 and flows past the check valve, which normally floats in the position shown in Fig. 5, to an outlet 22. The device also has a gas inlet valve comprising a rubber disc 37 pressed by a spring 46 against a seat 36 and adapted to be opened by a bell-crank lever 40 connected to the stem of the valve. The inlet valve is held in open position by balls 44 projecting through holes in a fixed collar 45b and engaging a shoulder on the valve. The balls are held in projected position by a bulbous part 45a on a stem 45 secured to the check valve 30. If a flash-back explosion occurs the check valve 30 is pressed so tightly against its upper seat 29 that the centre of the valve displaces the stem 45 to release the balls 44 and the inlet valve 37 closes. The pressure relief valve 34 opens. If a pipe downstream of the device fractures, the increased gas flow causes the check valve 30 to seat on the lower seat 31; the balls 44 are again released so that the inlet valve again closes. A bleed passage 47 in the lip of the lower seat 31 allows the pressure on both sides of the check valve 30 to equalize so that the valve again opens. In a simple embodiment, Figs. 1-4 (not shown), no gas inlet valve is provided and the pressure relief valve has a spring urged pin which engages the face of the valve when the valve is fully open and prevents it from closing.
