Abstract

Crude, 1,3,5-trioxane containing formaldehyde and possibly water and/or acids is purified by fractionally distilling it in the presence of a compound containing at least one -NH2 or >NH group, the compound being capable of reacting with formaldehyde in a neutral medium to form a stable compound. Suitable compounds are, for example, ammonia, hexa-methylenediamine, aniline, ureas, thioureas, guanidines, dianilidoethane, semicarbazides, thiosemicarbazides, melamines and hydroxylamine.
