Abstract

1,019,885. Flexible tubing; tube Joints. S. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd. Dec. 11, 1964 [Dec.12, 1963], No. 49209/63. Headings F2G and F2P. A length of plastic tubing is made up of a number of sections the adjacent ends of which have faces which engage one another and are welded or bonded together, which sections, or certain of them, particularly at locations where the tubing requires to be bent, are formed with circumferential corrugations 11 rendering the tubing flexible to bending. As shown, the sections may have cuff portions formed with grooves 12 which engage with the corrugations of an adjacent section or a fitting, the sections being relatively rotated at high speed so as to generate sufficient heat by friction to result in welding of the sections; alternatively, the corrugations of adjacent sections are cut in such a manner that a weld 24 ,Fig. 9 (not shown), is formed, or abutting faces of adjacent sections are connected by disposing between the faces a heated plate to sufficiently soften or melt the faces which are pressed together after removal of the plate. The tubing is of polypropylene and may be formed by a known blown moulding process. The tubing may be continuously formed by an extrusion process and passed between separate mould parts formed with cutters and shaped to correspond to the shape required for the sections.
