Abstract

Mono- and di-hydroxy alcohols are made by reducing the corresponding mono- or di-carboxylic acids with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of CuO and Cr2O3 with a Mn content of at least 60% (based on Cu). The reduction may be effected by use of a solvent at 180-250 DEG C. and at 30-400 atmospheres. Specified acids which may be so reduced are butyric, valeric, caproic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, suberic, hexahydrobenzoic, hexahydrophthalic, hexahydroterephthalic, phenylacetic, phenylpropionic and cinnamic acids. Examples describe the preparation of (1) 1 : 6-hexanediol from adipic acid, (2) pentane-diol, butanediols, hexane-1-ol and pentane-1-ol from a mixture of dibasic acids and (3) hexahydrobenzyl alcohol from hexahydrobenzoic acid.ALSO:Hydrogenation catalysts consist of CuO, CrO3 and a Mn content of at least 60% based on the Cu content. Additionally the catalyst may contain a minor proportion of Al2O3. The catalysts may be calcined at 300-600 DEG C.
