Abstract

Liquid trichlorosilane or silicon tetrachloride is freed from phosphorus trichloride by treatment with absorbent alumina coated with 0.1-25% of platinum tetrachloride. The halosilane may be pre-purified by distillation, any phosphorus pentachloride being thereby converted into trichloride. The coated alumina may be prepared by slurrying together alumina and chloroplatinic acid, evaporating to dryness, and baking at 320-370 DEG C. for at least an hour.
