Abstract

1,009,551. Silos. P. A. MARTINI. Aug. 1, 1961 [Aug. 3, 1960], No. 26884/60. Heading A1F. A silo is characterized in that instead of being vertical, it is horizontal or inclined and has openings at both ends so that it can be charged with forage at one end and the resulting silage discharged at the other end. As-shown the silo is charged through a filling opening fo provided with a pressure tight door t and the silage is moved toward the emptying opening eo by a conveyer f which may be provided with spikes and comprise a belt or lattice conveyer. A compressing plate q moved by cables or chains s is provided. The bottom b of the silo may slope from the sides to the middle to facilitate draining and a siphon sy is located at its deepest point. Valves sv and air inlets h are provided in the roof and air bags is serving to equalize pressure are located above the silage. The silo is preferably of semi-circular cross-section. In a modification the silage is compressed and moved by means of a hydraulically operated plate which also forms the door for the filling opening. Apertured probes may be inserted through the roof of the silo for drawing air from the silo or for introducing carbonic acid. A number of silos may be placed side by side to form a battery.
