Abstract

<PICT:1008580/C6-C7/1> Light polarizing material of the light transmitting or reflecting type is made by vacuum depositing a substance on a substrate surface while so controlling the rate of evaporation and the volume, dimensions and direction of the vapour stream that it is incident on the surface at an acute angle to the plane of the surface and is evaporated thereon as a plurality of laterally spaced filaments. These may be secured to the substrate by applying a protective coating. Specified vaporizable substances are Al, Ag, Pt, Pd, Au, Cr, W, C, Fe, Co, Ni, and alloys thereof, organic dyes in powder form such as isoviolanthrone, copper phthalocyanine and direct blue 87, AgBr, ZnS, AgCl, CdS, CaWO4 and diazo compounds. Specified substrates are methyl methacrylate, poly CF2CFCl and mica. Specified protective coatings are molten glass, clear plastic or a lacquer. According to one method of making a polarizing material, a transparent sheet 10, Fig. 1, e.g. of methyl methacrylate or poly CF2CFCl, is fed through a vacuum chamber 24 wherein vapour from a strip of metal, e.g. Al or Ag, or a dye powder heated in a heater 16 is directed by an orifice 16a on to the sheet at an acute angle. Protuberances in the sheet cast shadows which remain uncoated, the vaporized material being laid down in the unshaded areas as filaments. The sheet is given a binding and protective coating of plastic 34 from a dispenser 36 and is dried by an electric heater 38 and air circulator 40. Light passing through the polarizer so formed is plane polarized. In addition to or in place of guide elements forming the orifice 16a, the deposition may be directed by electric, magnetic or electromagnetic devices, e.g. when depositing ionized metal, the substrate or an element adjacent thereto is given an opposite charge. The vapour deposition may be through a mask, e.g. a silk screen. Specific polarizers referred to are a plane polarizer; a plane polarizer operating in a radial manner; an interference type colour transmitting polarizer; a circular polarizer; polarizers including phosphors for use in television receiver tubes; and polarizers having two images in displaced stereoscopic relation deposited in directions at 90 degrees to one another so that a three dimensional image can be seen through light polarizing viewers. Photosensitive materials may be deposited which can be converted into light polarizing images.
