Abstract
1,008,555. Surgical retractors. W. K. GUATHIEN. Dec. 19, 1962 [Dec. 22, 1961; Dec. 4, 1962], No. 47882/62. Heading A5R. An attachment, primarily for use with a standard surgical retractor comprises two rigid members 48, 50 associated with spacing means 52, which can be locked in a desired position. In the form shown the arms 48, 50 have grooves 70 which engage with ribs 66, 68 on the spacing bar 52, being held in position by spring or screw clamps 54. The free ends of the arms 48, 50 carry hooks or clamps 60 which engage the arms of a standard retractor 12 and a further blade 56 is adjustable mounted on the spacing bar 52. The latter co-operates with the retractor blades 30, 30, 42 in holding the incision open. Other forms of the device are described in which the rigid members 48, 50, 52 are replaced by flat, solid or slotted bars or by cylindrical rods, and various constructions of clamp are referred to.
