Abstract

1,007,719. Gas blowing lances. YAWATA IRON AND STEEL CO. Ltd. Nov. 20, 1961 [Dec. 2, 1960], No. 41437/61. Heading F4B. In a metallurgical refining furnace, a pair of air-tight rings having tapered inter-engaging surfaces are fitted over a hole for an oxygenblowing lance 1, the outer ring 5 being fixed to the furnace and the inner ring 2 being suspended from a fitting 3 fixed to the lance. As shown, the inner ring is suspended by cables 4 whereby the lance has a limited vertical movement relative to this ring; when the lance is withdrawn from the furnace the cables carry the ring 2 with it, the ring thus keeping clear of the lower end of the lance on which slag may be deposited. Alternatively, the ring may be suspended by a chain, coil spring or bellows. In a further modification, the outer ring may be hollow and connected by holes to the interior of the inner ring, a sealing gas, e.g. steam being introduced to prevent the furnace gas escaping through the clearance between the inner ring and the lance, the escape of the sealing gas being restricted by a labyrinth seal on the upper part of the inner ring.
