Abstract
1,004,165. Ultra-high pressure presses. BAROGENICS Inc. Dec. 12, 1963 [Dec. 13, 1962], No. 49173/63. Heading B1X. [Also in Division B3] An ultra-high pressure press comprises a plurality of pressure multiplying devices, e.g. 15<SP>1</SP>, 16<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, enclosing a cavity and movable inwardly thereof, each device comprising a support bolster 50 supporting, in a socket, a tool head 60 which projects forwardly of the bolster to provide a pressure applying face 70 which is of convexly arcuate form in planes parallel to the line of action of the device. In Fig. 2, six devices, of which only two are shown, enclose a generally cubic cavity, and the tool heads 60 are spheres of tungsten carbide or steel which are free to rotate in the hardened sockets 55 of the relatively soft bolsters 50. The spheres 60 are shown retained by rings 65, but can be held by a viscid lubricant alone in hemsipherical sockets. Bolsters 50 have conical tapers, and are spaced apart as shown. In use, the cavity contains material 11<SP>1</SP> to be compressed, enclosed in a casing 12<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3. Casing 12<SP>1</SP> is of pyrophyllite, talc or brass and Fig. 3 shows how hollows 76 are preformed in casing 12<SP>1</SP> to provide deformable gaskets between tool heads 60 during pressing. Devices of similar design may form a tetrahedral rather than a cubic array. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates four pressure multiplying devices having rotatable cylindrical tool heads which engage preformed axial grooves in four sides of an elongated body, which may be a composite body of the type described above or a homogeneous billet. Each device has a tapered cross-section, the rotatable heads are retained by cages, and each device is advanced by two hydraulic rams. End plates prevent axial extrusion of the body being pressed.
