Mechanism for transferring cigarettes from a conveyer 3 (Figs. 5 and 7) to trays 8 travelling in the opposite direction comprises a shoot 14 and a sloping guide 6 threaded freely between rollers 10, 11, 12, 20. The rubber roller 12 is continuously driven in the direction shown and when the tray is nearly full the guide 6 is pushed by the end wall of the tray and thus comes into contact with the roller 12 and is thereby raised until clear of the tray wall, when it drops into the next tray under gravity and the hooked end 21 is engaged by the roller 20. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8 the shoot 14 is replaced by a hopper 22 the level of cigarettes in which is controlled by an arm 23 which operates a switch 24 to stop the conveyer 3 when a predetermined level is reached. A shutter 25 is provided on the hopper 25 to prevent cigarettes falling into a succeeding tray until it has proceeded a sufficient distance under the hopper. The guide 6 is supported in a box 5 pivoted outside the trays on a pin 26. The rear edge of a nearly filled tray engages the guide 6 and pivots it and the box 5 about the pin 26 to the position shown in dotted lines. At the same time the guide 6 pivots about the roller 10 so as to contact the roller 12 and thus be raised clear of the full tray. After the rear edge of the full tray has passed the box 5 falls back to the position shown in full lines and the guide 6 descends to the bottom of the tray.
