Abstract

1,099,649. Latch fastenings. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. April 25, 1966,[Feb. 1, 1966], No. 4351/66. Heading E2A. A lock adapted to be mounted on one, 5 of two relatively movable parts and to cooperate with a striker 13 on the other, 7, of the two parts includes a lock member 15 movable by the striker between a locking position in which the striker is held and a release position in which the striker is released, a latch member 17 spring biased towards an engagement position and movable manually against the bias into a disengagement position and an automatic catch 21 operative to retain the latch member in its disengagement position against the spring bias, the latch member when in its engagement position and when the member 15 is in its locking position engaging the bolt to hold the member in its locking position and the latch member when retained by the automatic catch permitting the striker, to move the member 15 into its release position. As shown the member 15 and the latching member 17 are pivotally mounted about parallel horizontal axes in side walls of a housing 23 which is of inverted U shape and the free ends of the side walls are turned outwardly to form flanges by which the housing is secured to the part 5. The member 15 has a U shaped jaw 25 and three abutment surfaces 27, 29 and 31; the latching member 17 has a surface 33 which engages the surface 27 of the member 15 to hold it in the locking position and it also has a projection 35 which is engaged by the member 15 in its movement from the locking position to the release position to release the latching member from the automatic catch so that when the member 15 is moved back to its looking position by means of the striker when the part 7 is moved to its fastened position, the latching member is in a position to engage the surface 27 to hold the member 15 in the looking position. When the member 15 is in the release position it is held in such a position by the engagement of the latching member with the surface 29. The automatic catch is a spring leaf having a projection 37, a lug 43 of the latching member moving from one side of the projection to the other. The housing carries a rubber pad 43 which is engaged by the part 7 in its fastened position. The part 7 as described is the back rest of a rear seat of an estate car and two of the locks are used one on each side of the vehicle, to secure the back rest in a substantially upright position, the parts 5 are wheel arches.
