Abstract
1,098,422. Towed targets. HAYES INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. July 20, 1965 No. 30849/65. Heading B7W. A towed aerial target adapted to be towed at speeds above Mach 1 comprises a tubular elongated body having an overall fineness ratio greater than seven (in the' embodiment seventeen), a horizontal pivot connection 19 for a towing cable T intermediate the ends of the body, horizontal stabilizing surfaces 13 and similar vertical surfaces located to create a centre of lift pressure at least one body diameter rearwardly of the centre of gravity 17 of the target, said horizontal surfaces 13 being cambered, e.g. by forming them in section substantially as a half diamond to create a nose-down pitching moment M which is substantially constant throughout subsonic and supersonic speed ranges of the target, said tow cable connection 19 being located substantially on the centre of gravity 17 of the target, thereby to provide a target which flies with its longitudinal axis substantially within + 5 degrees of any given flight path at all speeds above 150 knots I.A.S. The vertical surfaces are substantially diamond shape in section.
