Abstract
An anti-static composition comprises a polymer or copolymer of a monovinyl monocyclic aromatic compound in admixture with a quaternary ammonium compound whose cation has the general formula NR1R2R3R4 where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are C1- 20 alkyl radicals and together contain at least 5 carbon atoms and with an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or aluminium silicate. The polymer may be derived from styrene, vinyl toluene or a -methyl styrene or a mixture of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene and may contain a minor amount of a synthetic rubber, e.g. a polymer of butadiene with optionally styrene or acrylonitrile. The ammonium compound may be dimethyl ethyl (propyl, cetyl or dodecyl) ammonium sulphate. The polymer may be in granule form and the ammonium compound and the silicate may be blended together prior to admixture with the polymer.
