Abstract
Olefins are oligomerized in the presence of a catalyst which is prepared by heating Co(NO3)2 deposited on activated carbon substantially free from water to initiate an exothermic reaction, and maintaining the carbon at a temperature below 500 DEG C. until substantially complete reaction has taken place. The olefin may be ethylene, propylene, a butene or a pentene. If desired two or more olefins may be co-oligomerized. Typical conditions for oligomerization are Temp. 80 DEG C., Pressure 800 p.s.i.g., L.H.S.V. 0.1 to 5 vol./vol./hour. Examples describe the oligomerization of propylene to hexenes.ALSO:Oligomerisation catalysts are made by heating Co(NO3)2 deposited on activated carbon substantially free from water to initiate an exothermic reaction, and maintaining the carbon at a temperature below 500 DEG C until substantially complete reaction has taken place. The carbon made be maintained in a fluidised state by an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen. Alternatively the catalyst may be made by feeding carbon into the top of a column of inert gas wherein impregnation with Co(NO3)2 takes place followed by decomposition thereof and catalyst is collected from the base of the column.
