Abstract
1,095,842. Pulse radar. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTONHOTCHKISS BRANDT. Dec. 17, 1964 [Dec. 17, 1963], No. 51458/64. Heading H4D. In a pulse compression radar wherein the transmitter produces a radio frequency pulse of constant amplitude and relatively long duration # which is linearly modulated in frequency as a function of time with a deviation much greater than 1/# and equal to 1/ #2 , where # 2 is the duration of the compressed pulse, a supplementary modulation is added within duration T by a modulating signal of which a parameter is caused to vary as a function of time and the transmitter output signal is fed to a filter of bandwidth 1/# 2 or the receiver incorporates such a filter. The modulating signal may include a train of sub-pulses of variable duty factor (by variation of sub-pulse duration, by variation of sub-pulse repetition rate, or by both) or may produce a supplementary frequency modulation at a rate of the order of 1/# 2 and of variable index. It is stated that the time side-lobes in the compressed pulse are reduced and that the effects of Doppler frequency shifts are compensated. With a supplementary frequency modulation, Fig. 5c, the rate is greater than 1/# 2 and the index is a minimum at the ends of the long pulse. The transmitter may utilize klystrons and a gain-controlled amplifier.
