Abstract

A steam-sterilizing chamber comprises a compartment containing a temperature sensitive element, e.g. a thermister, separated from the chamber by a porous element, e.g. silicon carbide selected so that the sensor indicates a temperature similar to that in the most inaccessible parts of the load thus permitting control of the process to the requirements of the load. Preferably, another temperature sensing element is provided in the chamber and the two sensors in a comparison circuit may be used to control an automatic sterilizing process comprising the alternate admission of steam and evacuation until the first (protected) element indicates that the sterilizing temperature has been reached throughout the load and thereafter, steam is admitted to maintain this temperature for a predetermined period before the steam is removed and air is admitted.
