Abstract

1,093,744. Washing machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 7, 1966 [March 15, 1965], No. 9816/66. Heading D1A. A washing machine comprises two valves each controlling the flow of water under pressure to the inlet of a clothes container, a reservoir for liquid treating-agent, a conduit connecting said reservoir to said inlet and subject to an aspirating effect of the flow of water controlled by one of said valves, and a control system for regulating both the amount of water provided to said container and also the length of time which said one valve permits aspiration of said conduit during the flow of water through said inlet means. Pipes 37 and 38 respectively convey hot and cold water to a valve 39 which discharges via a pipe 43 into the open end 45 of a duct 46 leading to a tub (21). Flow of hot and cold water through valve 39 is controlled by energisation of solenoids 40 and 41 respectively. A pipe 47 conveys hot water from upstream of valve 39 to a valve 48 which discharges via a pipe 50 into duct 46 on energisation of a solenoid 49. Valve 48 is formed with a Venturi passage connected via a pipe 54 to a container 56 for liquid bleach, whereby the latter is drawn into valve 48 and mixes with the water in pipe 50 when solenoid 49 is energised. A vertical open-ended pipe 50a positioned downstream of valve 48, prevents bleach from entering pipe 47 if pressure falls abnormally therein. The arrangement is such that valve 39 passes approximately 3“ gallons of water per minute, while valve 48 passes from 1 to 2 pints of water per minute and draws up about ¢ pint of bleach per minute. Tub (21) is carried by a structure (23) journalling a shaft (17) rigid with an impeller (19) and the arrangement is such that when a driving motor (8) rotates in one direction shaft (17) oscillates and tub (21) remains stationary for the washing operation, and when motor (8) rotates in the other direction shaft (17) and tub (21) rotate together for the rinsing and spin-drying operations. The washing cycle is controlled by a set of timing motor-driven rotary cams. A cam (A) determines the direction of rotation of motor (8), a cam (B) controls solenoid 40 and a cam (C) controls solenoid 41. Cams (E), (F) and (G) control the duration of time motor (8) operates and thereby the level of water in tub (21), since the motor, when operating, operates a centrifugal linkage to open the circuits of solenoids 40 and 41. The arrangement is such that the tub (21) is initially filled either full, or 0.8 full or 0.6 full, and the impeller then oscillates for the remainder of the washing period, while a quantity of bleach proportional to the water level is added near the end of the washing period. The tub is then spun, is again re-filled for the rinsing operation, and is finally spun before a cam (D) switches off motor (8).
