Abstract

1,093,131. Telescopes. BARR & STROUD Ltd. July 15, 1964 [July 24, 1963], No.29253/63. Heading G2J. An optical telescope instrument comprises an objective lens system 2, an eyepiece lens system 3 and a gyro-stabilized means having at least one reflecting surface positioned so that where d is the distance, along the optical axis, between said surface and the focal point of the objective lens system, and f 1 and f 2 are the focal lengths of the objective and eyepiece lens systems respectively. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 in which a rotor 6 is mounted in a pair of gimbals 8, 9, the three axes being parallel to the line of sight, the pitch axis and the yaw axis respectively, a plane mirror 4 is secured to the inner gimbal 8. This mirror 4 is positioned so that where i is the angle of incidence of the optical axis on the mirror surface. A collimation mark may be viewed in superposition on a distant object by means of a semi-reflector 10 which directs an image of the mark displayed on a cathode ray tube towards the objective lens system 2. In the embodiment of Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) the stabilizing means is incorporated into a binocular instrument. For each eye is provided an objective (15), three prisms (16), (17) and (18) and an eyepiece (19). The two sets of prisms are mounted on the inner gimbal of a gyroscope. For optimum correction of the instrument, the mean distance D measured along the optical axis between the reflecting surfaces of the prisms and the focal point of the objective (15) is D =f1-f2/2
