Abstract

Polymers containing units of formula <FORM:1092824/C3/1> where m is 1 or 2, are prepared by reacting a dihalide of formula <FORM:1092824/C3/2> where Hal is chlorine, bromine or iodine, with an alkali metal hydroxide or alkoxide in an inert diluent medium. The polymers may be reduced, e.g. with an alkali metal in liquid ammonia, to polymers containing units of formula <FORM:1092824/C3/3> In examples, polymers are obtained from a ,a 1-dichlor - p - xylene, a ,a 1 - dibromo - p - xylene and 4,41-bis-(bromomethyl) diphenyl by reaction with sodium hydroxide, potassium t-butoxide and potassium hydroxide, in dimethylsulphoxide, dimethyl aniline, dimethyl formamide, xylene, dioxane and t-butanol, and one polymer is reduced with sodium in liquid ammonia.
