Abstract
A coating composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of (a) 10 to 70% by weight based on the total weight of the dispersion of a finely divided fluorocarbon polymer and (b) 3 to 25% by weight based on the weight of the polymer, of mineral fibrils, said fibrils having an average length of from 10 millimicrons to 5000 microns and being coated with an ionizable fluoroalkyl surfactant, the weight ratio of said fluoroalkyl surfactant to said fibrils being from 0.01:1 to 1:1. Fluorocarbon polymers exemplified are polytetrafluoroethylene and a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene. The mineral fibrils are preferably fibrils of potassium titanate, titanium dioxide or boehmite. The ionizable fluoroalkyl surfactant preferably has the formula (XCF2)(CF2)m-R, where m is an integer of from 1 to 10, X is hydrogen or fluorine and R is an ionizable monovalent radical, or has the formula [H(CF2)2nCH2O]xPO(OM)y where n is an integer of from 1 to 5, x is an integer of from 1 to 3, y is 3-x, and M is hydrogen, alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium. The compositions are used for coating metals (see Division B2).ALSO:Metal articles are coated by a process which comprises (a) applying a layer of a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of (a) 10 to 70% by weight of the dispersion of a finely divided fluorocarbon polymer and (b) 3 to 25% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of mineral fibrils, said fibrils having an average length of from 10 millimicrons to 5000 microns and being coated with an ionizable fluoroalkyl surfactant, the weight ratio of said fluoroalkyl surfactant, to said fibrils being from 0.01:1 to 1:1 (see Division C3) to a metal substrate and (b) coalescing this layer to a continuous film by heating to a temperature of at least 700 DEG F. The Examples refer to coating aluminium panels which may be primed.
