Abstract

1,089,155. Data transmission systems. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. May 31, 1965, [June 26, 1964], No. 23013/65. Heading H4P. Data is transmitted in groups of bits, and in each group the number of 1 bits in the even positions is equal to the number in the odd positions. In the embodiment described, data in 4-out-of-8 code is transformed to data having the above characteristic, by inverting alternate bits. The input data is fed in to a shift register which is read out to an OR gate under control of a clock. A toggle, controlled by the clock, also feeds the OR gate. The resultant data has the required form and frequency modulates a carrier for transmission. The receiver performs, a complementary function. The frequency spectrum of the modulated signal has maximum amplitude at the carrier frequency and negligible amplitude at the carrier frequency plus or minus half the bit rate.
