Abstract

1,088,950. Continuous dyeing of protein fibres; apparatus for dyeing textiles, COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. Oct. 5, 1965 [Oct. 9, 1964], No. 42169/65. Headings D1B and D1L. Protein fibres, e.g. wool or silk are dyed in a continuous process comprising the steps of impregnating a sliver of the fibres with a solution of dye in formic acid, the formic acid constituting at least 70% by weight of the dyeing liquor, nipping the impregnated fibres to reduce the liquor:fibre ratio to 2:1 to 6:1, feeding the fibres to a conveyor allowing the fibres to remain thereon until dye uptake has occurred and washing and drying the dyed material. The dye is preferably at 40-80‹C., contains 70-80% formic acid and the preferred liquor:fibre ratio is between 4:1 and 4.5:1. The dye liquor is preferably applied by spraying and the washing accomplished in formic acid baths of decreasing concentrations, e.g. 15%, 5% and 1.5% and finally a water or dilute alkali bath. The dyes may be reactive, acid milling, acid levelling and 1:1-prematallised dyes; chrome blacks may be obtained by chroming at the 1.5% formic acid wash stage. A suitable apparatus is described with reference to Figures 1-3. The wool enters the dyeing enclosed apparatus 1 at 4, is impregnated with dye solution by spray device 6, is squeezed by rolls 13a and 13b and is passed to conveyor belt 18. It is lifted from the belt and passed through nip rollers 21a and b and passed into enclosed washing apparatus 29. The wool is washed by passage through formic acid baths 33, 39 and 47 of decreasing concentration and hot water bath 57 and each time is squeezed by the rollers as shown. A system for recycling the formic acid is also shown.
