Abstract

A method of producing grain-oriented silicon-iron sheet steel, comprises reducing the steel to substantially its final thickness by hot rolling operations. Three examples of producing silicon-iron alloy sheets containing between 2% and 10% by weight of silicon are described, and one example is as follows:- (1) A vacuum melted silicon-iron ingot 3% silicon is hot rolled at a temperature of 1,150 DEG C. to a thickness of 0.120 inches. The band produced is (a) Sand blasted. (b) Heated to 800 DEG C. and held at this temperature for 10 minutes in a forming gas. (c) Hot rolled to a thickness of 0.052 inches. (d) Pickled. (e) Heated to 800 DEG C. and held at this temperature for 10 minutes in a forming gas. (f) Hot rolled to a thickness of 0.026 inches. (g) Pickled. (h) Heated to 800 DEG C. and held at this temperature for 10 minutes in a forming gas. (i) Hot rolled to a final thickness of 0.013 inches. (j) Pickled. (k) Surface smoothed by pinch pass on a cold mill. (l) Degreased. (m) Anneal at 1150 DEG C. for 24 hours in a hydrogen atmosphere of dew points less than -50 DEG C. to effect a secondary recrystallization texture.
