Abstract

Copolymers of 40-80 parts butadiene and 60-20 parts of esters of fumaric and/or maleic acids with C1-12 alcohols are produced by copolymerizing the monomers in aqueous emulsion at a temperature not greater than 30 DEG C. in the presence of an organic peroxide and ethylene diamine as activator. The peroxide may be benzoyl or cyclohexanone peroxide, or cumene or butyl hydroperoxide. A chain transfer agent, e.g. diisopropyl xanthic disulphide or mercaptans, e.g. tert.-dodecyl, may be present. Emulsifiers, e.g. alkali metal salts of fatty acids, resin soaps, alkyl, e.g. C14-16, sulphates and sulphonates may be used. The copolymers may be stabilized, in aqueous emulsion, with di(2-oxy-5-methyl-3-tert.-butylphenyl)-methane; and may contain n-dibutyl tetrahydrophthalate as a by-product.
