Abstract
1,081,882. Ropes and cables. BETEILIGUNG SUND PATENTVERWALTUNGS G.M.B.H. April 30, 1965 [May 2, 1964], No. 18372/65. Heading D1T. A multi-layer rope or cable stranding machine passes the rope or cable in one direction for one stranding operation and in the reverse direction for the next stranding operation, and so on, characterised in that the rope or cable rotates about its axis and that the stranding elements are supplied from stationary delivery spools mounted laterally with respect to the axis of the machine and in a manner permitting the stranding elements to be run off irrespective of the direction of motion of the cable or rope. Fig. 3 shows a tubular spool frame 1 carrying a plurality of spool mountings 3. When the rope or cable 4 passes from left to right the stranding elements follow the paths indicated in full lines and pass through the lay plate 24. When the rope or cable 4 passes from right to left the stranding elements follow the paths indicated in broken lines and pass through the other lay plate 24. The frames 1 are stationary during a stranding operation but the drive means 6 to 10 can be used to cause a step-bystep rotation of the frames, to facilitate changing of the spools as and when necessary. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates how each spool (19) is supported on two trunnions (14, 18). Trunnion (14) has a brake drum fitted with a brake (22) and dynamometer (23). Trunnion (18) includes a releasable locking device whereby it can either extend into the spool or be withdrawn therefrom. Fig. 10 (not shown) shows a series of turntables (S) disposed in a horizontal plane on each side of the cable being stranded. Each turntable can carry one or more spools and the turntables can be adjusted to direct their stranding elements to either of the two lay plates at each end of the machine. Capstans. The apparatus includes endless chain type capstans (Fig. 7) (not shown), the cable passing between opposed pairs of said endless chains. Adjustable presser bars (38) press the chains (35) against the cable (4). Spool Carriers. The spool carriers may be ranged for reverse rotation. In Fig. 11 (not shown) the spool carrier (113) can be rotated reversely on its turntable by a worm drive (117, 118) on the main drive shaft (103), a transverse shaft (119), bevel wheels (120, 121, 122) and a shaft (123), mounted on the turntable. The bevel wheels ensure mechanical coupling of all the parts regardless of the position of the turntable. To provide for gradual reverse rotation of the spool carriers, for example during the stranding of pre-shaped sector conductors, overriding motors (124) are fitted to the shafts (119).
