Abstract
107,990. Ward, J. A., and Read, F. O. Oct. 12, 1916. Inhalers; gas and vapour douches.-Apparatus for administering oxygen or other gases and vapours by inhalation or as a throat douche, comprises a gas cartridge 2 held within a casing 1 having a box substantially larger than the cartridge and provided with ventilation apertures 1<a>. The casing 1 is closed at the upper end by a screw plug 5 carrying a cutting-nipple 9, and at the lower end by a screw-plug 4 adapted to force the cartridge against the nipple 9 so as to pierce the sealing diaphragm and release the gas. The gas passes via an expansion chamber 11, needle valve 12, gasbag fitting 13, 14, non-return valve 16, and union 18 to a face mask. The valve 16 mav be combined with means for mixing the gas with atmospheric air. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement in which the cartridge container is connected to the chamber 11 by an elbow piece 11<a>. Figs. 4 and 5 show a modification in which the gas passes from the valve 12 through a chamber 20 containing an absorbent saturated with a medicated liquid to a nozzle 28. The chamber 20 surrounds a tube 21 which is perforated on each side of a partition 24 so that the gas takes the path indicated by the arrows. The cartridge containing case 1 may be replaced by a revolver-like fitting so that a number of cartridges may be used in succession.
