Abstract
1,078,915. High voltage switches. JAMES R. KEARNEY CORPORATION OF CANADA Ltd. Oct. 13, 1964, No. 41806/64. Heading H2B. [Also in Division F2] The contact blade 17 of a highvoltage isolator is moved by means of a linkage first about a horizontal axis 15 into the closed position and then about its own longitudinal axis to make contact with the fixed contacts (50, 51), (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). The linkage comprises rods 24, 25 of adjustable length joined by universal couplings to the blade 17 and a rotatable member 21 mounted upon a crank 19 which is rotatable, by means of an insulator column, on a shaft 18; the rotatable member 21 is joined by a crank 33 to a link 34 rigidly carrying a cam follower 36 engaging a slot 31, 32 in a member 30, rigid with a fixed part of the switch. In rotating crank 19 anticlockwise to close the switch slot 31 and follower 36 initially prevent rotation of member 21 so that blade 17 is simply pivoted about 15 until follower 36 enters the opening 32 whereupon further rotation of crank 19 rotates the member 21 and also the blade 17. A coiled spring (60), (Fig. 7, not shown), acts to counterbalance the weight of blade 17. The switch can be modified to engage blade 17 with fixed contacts in both positions by forming a second opening 32 at the other end of slot 31. In a second embodiment (Figs. 9-16, not shown), a geared drive is inserted between shaft 18 and the insulator column and the counterbalance is achieved by a leaf spring (72); the cam follower 36 is permitted to rotate and member 21 is prevented from rotating in the initial movement of crank 19 by means of a second cam and follower (85, 89). The linkage is arranged to pass over centre in its extreme position to prevent reverse movement of blade 17. Connection to blade 17 may be established by a second clip contact (not shown), engaging an extension of the lower end of blade 17. Connection to the fixed contacts (50, 51), (Fig. 9, not shown), is established through a voltage grading ring (79).
