Abstract
1,078,771. Remotely controlled fastenings. MINISTER OF AVIATION. Dec. 31, 1964 [Jan. 2, 1964], No. 282/64. Heading E2A. [Also in Division G1] A gyroscope is provided with a shroud 10 surrounding the rotor 11 and within the inner gimbal 2 to reduce gyro drift due to windage the shroud being freely rotatable on bearings 8 about the rotor spin axis, a nozzle 14 being provided for caging the shroud and gimbals 2, 1 while the rotor is accelerated to a desired speed by air supplied to an inlet 27 and passing through the nozzle 14. The nozzle 14 is provided at one end of a pipe 20 and co-operating bores 15, 16 are provided in the gimbal 1 and shroud 10 to allow the passage of the nozzle therethrough. The nozzle is held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by a catch 22 against the action of a spring 21, the catch 22 being spring loaded to release the pipe 20. In use air is supplied to the inlet 27 to bring the rotor to the desired speed, and this air is also applied to an inlet 28 thus acting on a piston 19 solid with the pipe 20. The air pressure is such that it just exceeds the pressure of the spring 21, thus releasing the catch 22. When the rotor has been brought to speed the air supply is cut off, and the spring 21 retracts the pipe 20 and nozzle 14 clear of the gimbal 1 thus releasing the gyro.
