Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In a pumping apparatus suitable for supplying liquid fuel to the burners of an aircraft gas turbine engine, a centrifugal engine-driven pump 2 receives fuel through a pipe 1 and valve 13 and delivers it to spray nozzles 7 via a positive displacement pump 4 and a flow control valve 38. The pump 4 caters for starting conditions, when the pressure developed by the pump 2 is insufficient for satisfactory fuel atomization by the nozzles 7. Adjustment of a manually operable cam 46 of a flow control device 6 varies the throttling of a port 42 and consequently the pressure difference communicated to opposite sides of a piston 51 via pipes 56, 58. This causes the piston to move and adjust the throttling of a port 64 to control the pressure communicated through pipe 66 to one side of a controlling piston 15 for the valve 13. The valve 13 controls the rate of flow such that the liquid within the pump forms an annulus whose radial depth controls the pump delivery pressure. The device 6 may be additionally responsive to parameters such as maximum speed and air to fuel ratio. When the delivery of the pump 4, at a given pump speed, exceeds the regulated delivery of the pump 2, the excess is recirculated to the pump 4 via a pipe 21, throttle valve 22 and non-return valve 23. The recirculation is controlled by adjustably throttling a port 31 by a spool 28 in accordance with the pressure difference across the pump 2 to thereby maintain the pressure difference at a substantially constant value. The spool 28 is geared at 35, 36 to a rotating shaft 37 to avoid static friction and is provided with an axial thrust bearing 33. When the delivery from the pump 2 exceeds that of the pump 4, the excess by-passes the latter through a non-return valve 25 and pipe 24 to the control valve 38 and nozzles 7. The pump 4 may be driven by the engine or by hydraulic or electric means. The drive to the pump 4 may be disconnected when the engine reaches a speed at which the pump 2 develops sufficient pressure. The pump 4 may have variable volumetric capacity in which case the recirculation means would be omitted.
