1,078,145. Hydraulic reciprocating motors and pumps. J. C. RIDLEY. June 8, 1966 [June 11, 1965], No.24824/65. Heading F1A. In a swash plate pump or motor each spring- loaded piston 16 acts as a distributing valve for another piston 16, 90‹ out of phase, the pistons having a circumferential groove 19 controlling communication of port (25) Fig. 2 (not shown) and port 26 with cylinder transfer passages (27), (28) Figs. 3 to 5 (not shown). Ports (25), 26 serve as inlet or outlet ports according to the direction of rotation of the swash plate. Cylinder inlet and outlet grooves 21, 22 are interconnected by respective transverse passages through the cylinder block, (23), (24) Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown), groove 19 co-operating with the passage openings to provide accurate timing. In the pump embodiment shown, groove 19 is shorter, e. g. by 0À015 inch, than the distance between the inlet and outlet passage openings to give a small lag between inlet closing and outlet opening, a further inlet 32 being provided in each piston and controlled by ball valve 33 to permit entry of liquid from chamber 11 when the main inlet is closed early. Chamber 11 is connected to the pump supply.
