Abstract

The invention comprises compounds having an active methylene group which is directly connected to two carbonyl groups in an open chain in which one of the hydrogen atoms of the active methylene group is substituted by an aryloxy or substituted aryloxy group or a heterocyclyloxy group. Preferably one carbonyl group is directly connected to an amino or substituted amino group and the other is directly connected to a carbon atom which is either directly connected to three other carbon atoms or forms part of a benzene ring. Preferred compounds have the formula <FORM:1077874/C2/1> OR <FORM:1077874/C2/2> wherein Q is a carboxylic acyl group having 5 to 32 carbon atoms, the carbon atom attached to the carbonyl radical of the carboxylic acyl group being tri-substituted, R and R1 each represent hydrogen or alkyl, substituted alkyl, heterocyclic, aryl or substituted aryl groups which may be the same or different, R2 represents an aryl or substituted aryl group or a heterocyclic group and R3 is an aryl or substituted aryl group.
