Abstract
A non-aqueous polymerizable system comprises at least two separate components one of which contains an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a first compound and another of which consists of or contains a second compound, the one of the first and second compounds not being sulphur dioxide when the other is an organic hydroperoxide, the first and second compounds constituting the two parts of a redox catalyst system which when mixed causes at least 50% of the monomer to polymerize within 10 minutes at 50 DEG C. or below. Suitable systems are t.-butyl hydroperoxide+ sulphuryl chloride, and ascaridole+sulphur dioxide. In addition at least one of the components may contain a polymer dispersed or dissolved therein such that polymerization may take place in the form of a film or by bonding particles together. The invention also provides a method of bonding articles which comprises forming and allowing to polymerize between the articles a film containing the components of a non-aqueous polymerizable system, one of which components contains a monomer and a first compound and another of which components consists of or contains a second compound, the first and second compounds constituting the two parts of a redox catalyst system which on mixing causes at least 50% of the monomer to polymerize within 10 minutes at a temperature of 50 DEG C. or below. The second compound may be gaseous, e.g. sulphur dioxide, and may diffuse between the articles to be bonded. In an example a resin containing epoxide groups was dissolved in a mixture of methylacrylate, methyl methacrylate and acrylic acid. t.-Butyl hydroperoxide was added and the composition was coated on steel panels. Sulphur dioxide gas was sprayed over the sufaces and the panels were joined. The monomers polymerized whereafter the epoxide groups reacted with each other and with the active hydrogens of the polymer.ALSO:Articles are coated by forming and allowing to polymerize on the surface a film containing two components, the first component, comprising an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a first compound and the second component comprising or consisting of a second compound, the two compounds constituting the two parts of a redox catalyst system which causes at least 50% of the monomer to polymerise within 10 minutes at 50 DEG C. or less. In an example copper wire is passed through a composition comprising a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate dissolved in methylacrylate and ethylene glycol diacrylate containing ascanidole; and then into an atmosphere containing sulphur dioxide.
