Abstract

Foamed vinyl chloride polymers are produced by incorporating a blowing agent in a vinyl chloride polymer containing a homopolymer of methyl methacrylate or a copolymer of methyl methacrylate with up to 25% molar of an alkyl acrylate in which the alkyl group contains from 1 to 10 carbon atoms and the composition foamed by heating. The vinyl chloride polymer is preferably a homopolymer of vinyl chloride, but a copolymer of vinyl chloride with up to 10%, by weight of another copolymerizable monomer, or a blend of a vinyl chloride homopolymer with a copolymer of vinyl chloride and another copolymerizable monomer in which the blend contains less than 10% by weight of the other copolymerizable monomer may be used. Monomers that may be copolymerized with vinyl chloride include vinyl esters, vinylidene chloride, alkyl esters of unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids such as acrylic, methacrylic, maleic and fumaric acids and in particular the methyl, ethyl and isopropyl esters of such acids. The acrylic polymer is present in an amount between 0.1 part and 25 parts of acrylic polymer per 100 parts of vinyl chloride polymer. The blowing agent may be methyl chloride or any organic liquid that has a boiling point below 30 DEG C., or a solid blowing agent, e.g. azodicarbonamide may be used. Uses.-The expanded products may be in sheet form and are useful as thermal insulants, and in life-saving and other buoyant equipment.
