Abstract

1,071,827. Gas burners. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Aug. 18, 1964 [Aug. 20, 1963], No. 33718/64. Heading F4T. A gas burner plate 18 comprises a thinwalled ceramic honeycomb in which gas passages defined by walls 30 extend between a gas-air inlet surface 27 and a combustion surface 28, cylindrical cavities 32 being cut, drilled or ground in the combustion surface 28, various dimensions being specified. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cavities 32 are arranged in rectilinear pattern, in two other embodiments, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) additional cavities are interposed in a rectilinear pattern, and in two further embodiments, Figs. 5A and 5B (not shown), each cavity has a central nub extending upwards from the base of the cavity. Various ceramic compositions may be used, e.g. those described in Patent No. 829,447. The ceramic burner plate 18 is made by a process involving crimping of a ceramic-coated carrier and sintering, substantially as described in Specification 882,484. Gas may be supplied with air to a mixing chamber (not shown) attached to the tube 16 or the gas may aspirate air into the gas stream to the tube 16. The gas-air mixture is delivered through the tube 16 to a baffled mixing chamber 20 below the burner plate 18. The gas used may be propane, butane, natural, manufactured or town gas.
