Abstract

A pneumatic percussion machine such as for nailing or stapling, comprises a percussion piston 4 controlled during its working stroke by a valve 21, means 7, 8 for returning the piston after its working stroke, and a holding device for retaining the piston in its rest position including an element 26 made at least partly from a rubber-like resilient material and adapted to interengage with a locking means 4<SP>11</SP>. The piston 4 is slidable in a cylinder 5 surrounded by a sleeve 6 so as to define an annular chamber 8 communicating with the space below the piston via holes 7. In operation, upon actuation of the valve 21, compressed air is fed via an inlet 17, chamber 16, passage 22 to act on the top of the piston until the pressure reaches a value at which the locking means 4<SP>11</SP> disengages itself from the resilient element 26 and thus causes a driver 14 to drive in a nail 13<SP>1</SP>. During the downward stroke the air below the piston is forced via the holes 7 into the chamber 8 where it is compressed so that when the valve is closed, the piston is returned to its rest position. In a modification, the resilient element 26 is replaced by a resilient ring located in a groove in the piston and engaging with a groove formed in the wall of the cylinder. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the resilient element is formed with a flange 236 secured to a piston member 237 which in the rest position of the machine is acted upon by compressed air via a port 257 and pipe 254 so as to force the flange 236 into contact with the end of the cylinder. When the valve 256 is actuated, the flow of air to the piston 237 is cut off, thereby allowing the flange to lift away from the end of the cylinder and so cause the percussion piston to be driven downwardly; the air above the piston is prevented from escaping to atmosphere by means of a pin 243 engaging in a hole 242 in the element 236. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5) the resilient element (326) is adapted to be expanded into locking engagement with the percussion piston 304 by means of air fed into the interior of the element via a pipe (354) and a port (363) in a pin (366).
