Abstract
Nitrogen, helium and any other gases which may require removal of oxidizable impurities, e.g. organic sulphur compounds, acetylenes, halogens, HCN, CO and NH3 are treated with a CnO composite mass which has been prepared by adding a water-soluble copper salt to a suspension of diatomaceous earth carrier in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate having a pH below 11.5, to precipitate a copper compound on the carrier, separating the product and admixing with a clay binder before firing at 600-800 DEG C. In examples a helium gas stream containing CO and H2 (100 p.p.m. of each) was purged using a catalyst containing 50.7% CuO, 33% diatomaceous earth and 16.3% clay.ALSO:A process for forming a CuO composite mass consists in adding a water-soluble copper salt to a suspension of diatomaceous earth carrier in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate having a pH below 11.5, to precipitate a copper compound on the carrier, separating the product and admixing with a clay binder before firing at 600-800 DEG C. Diatomaceous earth is described as having a surface area of only 1 to 30 sq. in./gm. and this is said to be advantageous. Subsequent to its preparation the catalyst may be oxidatively or reductively activated.
