Abstract

1,064,563. Counters. DURANT MANUFACTURING CO. March 2, 1964 [May 16, 1963], No. 8640/64. Headings G4D and G4H. [Also in Division H1] Each denomination of a numeral wheel counter comprises an electromagnetic drive which advances the wheel 24 when the electromagnet 42 is de-energized. When current is supplied to the electromagnet an armature 86, coated by a layer 87 of non-magnetic material, rocks a lever 78 about pivot 84 counterclockwise to pull a spring-pressed pawl 92 behind the next tooth 74<SP>1</SP> of a ratchet wheel 74. Release of the magnet allows the lever 78 to return under spring action to advance the ratchet wheel 74, gear 23 and numeral wheel 24. The ratchet wheel 74 has a hair-spring detent 84 and an overthrow preventing lever 100 which is lifted clear of the wheel during the counter-clockwise movement of lever 78. Adjustment of stepping mechanism. The armature 86 is influenced by a spring yoke 96, adjustable by cams 98. Unevenness in the attraction of the poles of the magnet 42 is compensated for by the shape of the yoke 96, the outer wings of which are aligned with the pivot 90 of bracket 88 on lever 78. The cams 98 provide a coarse adjustment of the return force applied to lever 78, a finer adjustment by cam 104 acting on spring 102. Read-out, resetting and carry. Wheels 23, 24 carry wiper blades 36, 32 in off-set manner so that the contacts purane concentric paths 34<SP>1</SP>, 35<SP>1</SP> and 30<SP>1</SP>, 311 on printed circuit pads on the side-wall of the casing, Fig. 4. At digit 9 wiper 32 connects transfer pad 118 to zero pad 120 so that the tenth pulse passes over this path to the next denomination, stepping taking place at the end of the pulse. In this manner several transfers can be effected simultaneously. Resetting may be effected from any position by applying pulses across conductors 122, 124 until the wiper reaches zero pad 120. Readout is effected by wiper 36 the appropriate contact pads to bus pad 126. Bus pad 126 may be connected to the input in which case switching and read-out occur at different times.
