Abstract

1,064,338. Valve tappets. JOHNSON PRODUCTS Inc. Aug. 26, 1965 [Nov. 4, 1964], No. 36728/65. Heading F2K. [Also in Division F1] In an I.C. engine valve gear an hydraulic tappet is held in alignment between an overhead cam-shaft 26 and valve stem 14 by a bracket 34 secured to the cylinder head 12 by a stud 34. Oil from the engine lubrication system passes via passages 68, 36 and 64 to annular groove 60 and thence via groove 70 and passages 80, 78 past check valve 84 into pressure chamber 88. During the valve opening movement check valve 84 is closed and oil from chamber 88 bleeds through hole 102. During the valve closing movement spring 92 moves plunger 74 and housing 52 away from body 76 to take up clearance, oil being admitted to fill chamber 88. Air from the system is bled through hole 100 when the housing 52 is clear of collar 42.
