Abstract
Liquid C3 hydrocarbon mixtures are purified to remove methylacetylene and propadiene by passing a solution of hydrogen in the liquid through a reactor containing a hydrogenation catalyst so that the reactor remains filledwith liquid. Hydrogen is dissolved by bubbling into the liquid or spraying the liquid or trickling it through a hydrogen atmosphere, the amount of hydrogen dissolved being regulated by the pressure or partial pressure of the hydrogen which may be, for example 0-50 atmospheres. The percentage of impurities may be reduced to reduce the hydrogen concentration necessary by recycling purified product. Reaction is effected at 0-80 DEG C. and up to 100 atmospheres to maintain the liquid phase with throughputs of 10-100 kg. of mixture per hour per litre of catalyst. The catalyst may be nickel or palladium on a support.
