Abstract

A carding engine provided with only two licker-in cylinders has the card clothing on these cylinders and the main cylinders arranged with the points facing in the direction of rotation. The first licker-in rotates more slowly and in opposite direction to the second and the second more slowly and opposite to the main cylinder. Dividers 33, 34, 35 are mounted to cooperate with the main and licker-in cylinders and these also have clothing points facing the direction of rotation, but second divider 34 may be reversed in position and taken out of direct association with licker-in 10 to serve as a tightener to licker-in 11. All the main cylinders of the machine are provided with shafts of the same length and projecting equidistantly from opposed ends so that cylinders may be interchanged or positions reversed without difficulty. Sprockets or belt pulleys being changed at the same time. Drives are mainly by sprockets and chains and the use of intermediate gear wheels is avoided.
