Abstract
An acoustical tile is moulded from agglomerate bodies composed of vermiculite or perlite particles bonded by an internal fire-resistant, water-repellant adhesive coating, the bodies being bonded externally by a water-repellent, fire-resistent binder. Exemplified methods include the following:-Asbestos fibres are mixed with the particles, and the mixture is sprayed with e.g. a water-soluble silicone resin binder. The asbestos fibres surround the vermiculite particles. The mixture is then dried by heating. The composition is then mixed with the external binder, an aqueous solution of sodium silicate with or without urea, or inorganic or organic bases. The composition is then placed in a mould, compressed to 7/8 inch thickness, and dried at not more than 200 DEG F., and allowed to cool. The tile may then be treated with aqueous solution of (NH4)2SiF6, HCl, or MgSiF6, e.g. by spraying, so as to impregnate the entire mass. The tile may then be painted. The tile may comprise a layer of particles not treated with the external binder. The tile may have some portions of greater density than others, and may have a bevelled or kerfed edge, and may be moulded with a flat or patterned surface. The tile may include reinforcing bars made of, e.g., aluminium alloy or thermosetting resin.ALSO:A moulded vermicalite or perlite acoustical tile is impregnated with an aqueous solution of HCl, (NH4)2 SiF6, or Mg SiF6, e.g. by spraying, to produce resistance to moisture absorption and freedom from warpage and buckling. The tile may be still hot when sprayed or it may have been allowed to cool.
