Abstract
1,056,381. Liquid seals. ABRASIVE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Dec. 29, 1964 [Jan. 7, 1964], No. 736/64. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F1] In a centrifugal pump, e.g. for liquids containing abrasives, the impeller 16 delivers liquid through the impeller housing outlet 14 to a connection 29 leading to the inlet 28 of a vortex chamber 12 coaxial with the impeller shaft 10, and liquid at the centre of the vortex flows to the impeller housing 11 through a clearance between the shaft and a surrounding sleeve 23 to form a liquid seal therebetween, the sleeve being sealingly secured at one end to the impeller housing. Due to centrifugal separation in the chamber 12, liquid substantially free of abrasives flows into the clearance. The flow through the clearance is caused by auxiliary impeller vanes 18, which are approximately half the length and a quarter of the depth of the main vanes 17. The sealing liquid additionally reduces vibration of the shaft.
